Over the years, my travels have provided me with inspiration for various design projects. And I’ve written a number of columns about my favorite destinations.

Traveling opens your mind to new experiences and broadens your scope of the world. It’s also a wonderful way to incorporate unusual pieces into your home that will remind you of the great time you had on your trip.

When selecting items to buy, avoid trinkets and other junk that isn’t even made in the location you’re visiting.

Instead buy things that are handcrafted in that region. To find out, consult a travel guide or ask someone in the local tourism office.

During a recent interview, interior designer Taniya Nayak talked about her new HGTV show, “Destination Design,” airing at 12:30 p.m. Saturdays. Her show offers homeowners an all-expenses-paid trip to a destination while she creates a beautiful space inspired by their vacation.

During a recent episode, a couple traveled to the Turks and Caicos Islands while Nayak stayed at their home and redesigned several rooms. The homeowners provided the inspiration for the design by sending back images of their exploration and favorite spots. Nayak took the textures, colors and pictures of the Caribbean and created a wonderful space inspired by their travels.

The next time you’re on vacation, jot down some of your favorite memories and take a few photos. When you return home, you’ll have a little inspiration to get you started on your next design project.

Do you have a travel destination that inspired you?
